PhD Studies and iBioMEP in a Nutshell

Application to the school

  • If you have your own funding you may submit your application at any time to coordinator Riikka Ahola (firstname.lastname(at)oulu.fi).
  • Funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture is announced separately.
Applications must include:
  1. Research plan with the proposed title and time schedule of the research.
  2. Study plan for the PhD studies at your home university.
  3. Recommendation from your supervisor (the supervisor must be a member of the school).
  4. Proof of acceptance as a PhD student from your home university.
    1. If you are about to complete your Masters degree within the next months you may also apply but then your acceptance to the school will be conditional to your acceptance as a PhD student by your own university.

Students of the school are obliged to

  • Participate at the courses organized by the school. Exceptions are only accepted by permission of your supervisor.
  • Select together with their supervisor a thesis supervisory committee of two to three members (subject to approval by the school board).
  • Meet with their supervisory board at least once a year and:
    1. Present the results of the past year and future plans to the board orally and in written form.
    2. Produce a written report of the meeting.
    3. Send both of these documents annually to the coordinator.

Supervisors are obliged to

  • Instruct their students to their best ability
  • Take care that the students meet all the requirements of the school.
  • Monitor the progress of the student and help early if there are problems in reaching the set goals in the set time schedule.
  • Maintain confidentiality of the student-supervisor relationship.

Thesis supervising committee is obliged to:

  • Independently review the student's progress on yearly basis.
  • Act as a mediator between the student and the supervisor should problems arise.
  • Maintain confidentiality of the student-thesis committee relationship.
